“There were kids there today.” “Yea, kids. That is why I got into teaching in the first place.” @jonsamuelson
Sometimes my priorities get lost. I became a teacher to be with kids. I very much enjoy seeing kids learn and grow. I truly believe that I make a difference in kids lives when they are in my class.
I miss the kids. In February 2014 I left the classroom for an amazing opportunity to move into a career in education technology. While it has been a great learning experience, I still miss the kids. I work mostly with adults, sometimes at schools. Most of the time, however, I am in an office dealing with procedural things. I tell myself that I am helping teachers improve their practice, thus making school better for kids. Still, I get caught up in the “office politics” of my new position and forget that I began a career in education to make a difference in the lives of kids.
I will, starting today, re-focus my priorities on the kids and what is best for them. I have always said that I will always ask, “is this what is best for kids?”, whenever having education discussions and making education decisions. For a while, I have gotten away from that focus.
My first priority is the students that I am responsible for. What is your first priority? What steps will you take to make sure that you don’t lose focus on that priority?
